学生 “Go Forth to Serve” — Making a Difference for Local Nonprofits

By: Kate Parker-Burgard, Center for 领导 Director
12月ember was a busy month at St. 卢克的, with numerous opportunities for 学生 to "Go Forth to Serve."

少年玩具驾驶
Led by the Class of 2024, the month kicked off with the annual 卡中心 假日玩具驾驶. For more than 20 years, St. 卢克的 has partnered with the 卡中心 在诺沃克.

学生, 教师, 工作人员, and families were invited to donate new, unwrapped toys for children ages 0-16. The toys were then distributed at the 卡中心 Holiday Party, where children from the center enjoyed a night of holiday crafts, 游戏, 在脸上画画, 点心, and pictures with Santa! Thank you to everyone who donated generously and to St. 卢克的 juniors Sylvia Samardijza, 妮可·佩雷斯, 梅根的情况, 富勒姆·里根, McLain Boege, and Sofia Staikos for coordinating 今年's events.

午夜跑包
Our Midnight Run Club, led by Atara Loewenberg '24, held its big run into New York City on Saturday, 12月. 3. The group collected clothing and food donations to deliver to people living on New York City's streets. It was cold and rainy the day of the run. However, that afternoon, close to 40 St. 卢克的 学生 showed up at school to help pack lunches, 这种化妆品, and load food and clothing into the van. Once everything was packed, 10个学生, accompanied by 上学校 Science Chair Janet Jochem, 上学校 English Chair Marta Napiorkowska, 和阿塔拉的父母, 进入城市. The group distributed over half of what they brought to people who were cold, 饿了, and living on the streets, despite many seeking shelter from the rain for the evening. The remaining food was put to good use and later delivered to 太平洋的房子 在诺沃克.

5th, 6th Gr Dog Biscuit Bake 服务
The 中学 was also bustling with service activity this 12月ember. 12月5日星期五. 2,  fifth and sixth graders spent time after school making dog treats for 爪子, a pet animal welfare society 在诺沃克. The 学生 sold the treats at St. 卢克的 Holiday Boutique and donated the leftovers to the dogs at the shelter.

7th 8th 服务 Blankets
下一个星期五, seventh and eighth graders were invited to stay after school to make blankets for 关爱圈, a Wilton-based organization that provides care packages to children recently diagnosed with cancer. These simple blankets feature two layers of colorful fleece, which are tied together around the edges to create a warm and cozy throw. Thank you to 中学 Science Chair Susan Bralower and the class parents for organizing these two events, which had the Fireplace Commons humming with activity.

Nonprofit Holiday Boutique
12月ember wouldn't be complete without St. 卢克的 Holiday Boutique! This annual event creates a shopping experience where people can buy holiday gift items, with all proceeds benefiting nonprofit organizations. Each pop-up shop is hosted by a student-led club, local organization, or St. 卢克的父. In addition to many other tables selling holiday gifts, 今年, the entire sixth grade made products in their designLab class to sell at the boutique, 包括钥匙, 手镯, 耳环, 饼干刀具, 和更多的. The 学生' imaginations were on full display, and their efforts resulted in about $2,000 being donated to worthy organizations that they selected, 其中包括350.org, World Wildlife Fund, Yale Hospital, and the Alzheimer's Association. We're grateful to all the parents, 学生, and 教师 who came to the event and helped make it so successful.

Throughout 12月ember, our community continued with the usual Wednesday afternoon trips to Inspirica, where we have a team of 上学校ers who volunteer in the Youth Center. 学生 interested in joining this group should reach out to 上学校 Science Teacher Maggie Calcio for more information.

While 12月ember is often noted as the month of giving, St. 卢克的 学生 embrace our school's motto, Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve year round. 请浏览 Center for 领导 服务 page to learn about upcoming opportunities.
